During a molt, chickens lose their feathers and grow new ones, which places great demands on their energy and nutrient stores. Since feathers consist of 85% protein, supplementing chickens’ diet with additional protein can help them get through the process. This protein-packed alfalfa cake recipe is a fantastic way to provide molting chickens with a variety of protein sources in one treat while keeping them entertained and active.

In the past decade, the popularity of backyard chicken keeping has elevated the status of chickens from expendable, barnyard livestock to valued family pets. Unfortunately, many of the earlier poultry-keeping articles and books were written with livestock in mind; frequently in those writings, culling is the proposed solution for certain injuries, behaviors and physical imperfections. "Culling" technically means to eliminate or remove from the flock, but the term is often used as a sanitized synonym for "kill." However, for most chicken-keepers, culling is considered the last resort and making a beloved pet the guest of honor at the dinner table, unthinkable.

Chickens poop a lot while they sleep and I knew that I had to put a stop to the nightly nest box occupations. I had read that hanging burlap in front of the nest boxes could deter these unwanted slumber parties and figured it was worth a try.
