Making leaf mold isn't a quick process. It takes time, but the results are worth the wait. It adds compost to the soil and it acts as a free mulch material.:

Piper's New Coop is coming along nicely. I spent all weekend working away at this chicken coop design in a 100° garage. I've been using all reclaimed or gifted wood and supplies which mean a lot of sanding off of old paint. It's a small chicken coop, but a cute one as it is all handcrafted with love. It's nice to stretch out my carpentry wings now and again!

Sand is becoming a very common coop bedding and it's easy to see why. Sand has so many benefits and when used properly, I think it's a bedding that you wont regret using.

A bird in the hand... Here's Piper the Silkie hen. She's been getting bullied for too long now by the bigger hens so I'm building her her very own chicken coop!

Homemade Fermented Hot Sauce: This experiment in fermentation was fun. Last night I had hot sauce on my dinner. I kept thinking “Will this make me sick?”. We are so brain washed by our culture to believe if it doesn’t come out of a plastic wrapper then it is bad. I’m working on clearing my brain of this kind of thinking, but it lingers. … and no, I did not get sick. It just tasted yummy.

Ok, I want to take a moment to brag on my 12 year old daughter. Today I came home from work to a treat. She made muffins! But not just any muffins. This is a recipe she made up. She knows I don't eat a lot of processed floor and sugar so she set out to make a healthy muffin. My Pear Butter in the recipe as a binder. Yeah, a binder... How many 12 year olds even know what that is? Well the muffins are GREAT. They are loaded with healthy ingredients like nuts, dates, raw honey, flax and more.

One of the great things about this time of year is that there’s so much growing in the garden that our meals come more and more from the garden and less and less from the grocery store. Today I thought I’d show you what I harvested for a vegetable soup that, except for some salt, was made entirely from garden ingredients.
