www.animalsasia.org If only I could speak (Amy-Le Owens) I have spent my life in this cage, incarceration is all I know. The bars clenched tight to my body, they are my tomb and my home. Veiled by terror and sorrow, there is barely room to breathe. To think of anything but the inevitable end would be senseless and naïve. I have seen my friends before me. I've heard their gasping breath. Dragged across the bile stained floor as they arrive at the valley of death. Inside I rage and scream, but externally I cower. For to draw attention to myself would bring closer my final hour. If this is all I'm good for, Just ceaseless, needless pain, then why gift me with a life? Why must I remain? Can't you hear our shouts for justice? Can't you hear our mournful cries? Can't you witness our fear-ridden bodies? Please God won't you open your eyes? I cannot fathom your reasons, behind this sickening game. We all feel hurt and emotions and our hearts they beat the same. People who are so eager, so willing to take a life, if the tables were turned I'm sure you too would beg them to drop the knife. You think you have right of privilege, to do with us what you please, because you have left us defenceless, begging on our knees. If I could only speak, then these are the words I would say. It doesn't take much to realise, that it should never have been this way. Give us a chance to feel safe, let us feel life's glory. Look into my eyes, gaze upon the despair and please listen to the words of my story.

Our viewers are well-familiar with investor and commodities guru Jim Rogers. They know he lives in Singapore and is a China bull. So, we skipped the usual China chit-chat, leaving that for other news outlets. Instead, we chose to focus on what other, smaller players in Asia he may be bullish on. It turns out that the country Jim Rogers is most bullish on, not just in Asia but in the world, is Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma. Our guest from last week, Chris Mayer, of the Daily Reckoning, was recently in Myanmar. He is also bullish on the country, so we decided to probe Jim Rogers a bit further. Rogers told us he would put all of his money in Myanmar if he could. But he didn't stop with Burma. Apparently, there is another country on that list that investors would probably not guess, at least not your casual, run-of-the-mill investor. What country is this? Why, it's North Korea! Jim Rogers lays out his logic for why North Korea will open up and merge with South Korea in the next few years, much of it having to do with the simple fact that the country and its newest leader, Kim Jong-un, see all the progress maid by China in recent decades and are jealous! (a simplification...watch the video for more detail!)

The Cambodian villages destroyed by the sugarcane industry Subscribe to the Guardian HERE: http://bitly.com/UvkFpD Thousands of Cambodian farmers claim they are losing their land and livelihoods to big sugar plantations, some of which are directly supplying the EU through companies including Tate & Lyle. The company has imported large volumes of sugar from Cambodia, where its supplier is accused of using child labour and being complicit in expropriating land and inflicting violence on local people, the Guardian can reveal. Tate & Lyle denies any human rights abuses.

http://www.veria.com/ In this video from Veria Living we see What is Organic in permaculture. Since Angie doesn't need to tend her orchard everynday, it's quite a bit further from her home than her garden. Unlike a typical apple orchard, Angie's orchard incorporates one of the key principles in permaculture: the forest garden. Beneath the apple trees sit a variety of flowers, herbs, and other useful plants.

http://www.veria.com/ In this video from Veria Living we see What is Organic when Nathan visits a husband-and-wife farming team -- one conventional and one organic. After watching her husband's chemical farming practices, Gavita Grewall convinced him to give her four acres of land so that she could grow chemical-free food for her family. What started humbly as four acres has now blossomed into a full-fledged 47-acre organic farm. From the produce to the animal feed to the Ayurvedic veterinary practices, Gavita's farm is truly organic.

From VOA Learning English, welcome to Economic News in Special English. Economic growth in East Asia and the Pacific region is expected to reach 7.9 percent this year. That is higher than in any other part of the world. But that is only part of the story. The other side of East Asia's success includes conflicting territorial claims in the area and trade imbalances with the rest of the world. Competition for natural resources is an increasingly important issue. This has led to territorial disputes. For example, the islands known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan are thought to be rich in oil. Areas around the islands are said to be good fishing grounds. China and Japan have competing claims for the territory. Kenneth Lieberthal is an Asia expert with the Brookings Institution here in Washington. He says he has not seen evidence that either China or Japan is willing to reduce tensions over the islands. That means territorial disputes will likely continue. China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines are involved in territorial claims with neighbors over West Pacific islands. Trade imbalances are another issue. East Asia has long been a source of exports. China's big trade imbalance with the United States has concerned U.S. lawmakers for years. Some blame China's control of its currency for America's big trade deficit. But Kenneth Leiberthal does not think so. He notes other policies. One is China's direct support for many of its important industries with government aid, or subsidies. Mr. Lieberthal says Chinese rules at home also hurt countries seeking to export to China. He says these and other issues such as the abuse of intellectual property rights have a much bigger effect on America's trade deficit with China. For VOA Learning English, I'm Laurel Bowman. The World Health Organization warns that overpopulation and a lack of arable land contribute to global food insecurity. Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) and Ana Kasparian (http://www.twitter.com/anakasparian) of The Young Turks discuss a graphic video showing a Chinese bear bile farming operation. Scientists have scrutinized the health effects of bear bile but have come to no definitive conclusions. But sold in powdered form as capsules, or as a tonic, bile is considered by many to be an elixir of sorts. Bile marketers say it fortifies the liver, reduces flu symptoms and improves eyesight. While provisions of food, shelter, and healthcare are all necessary for alleviating poverty in the developing world, the most sustainable way to help a community improve its standard of life in the long run is to provide education for its residents. Educated people are more aware of health issues, they farm more effectively, and they can begin to help others around them. For these reasons we here at List25 have decided to collaborate with Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that works to build schools in isolated and poverty stricken communities around the world. We want to help them change the lives of a generation. And here's the cool part...we're inviting you, our readers, to help! Our goals is to raise $25,000. For this amount we can build, staff, and maintain a school. If you are willing to help us change the world, then you can come find out more and partner with us: http://fundraise.pencilsofpromise.org/list25 We appreciate your support and believe that together we can make a tangible impact in the lives of the next generation. These are 25 compelling reasons why education is important. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-compelling-reasons-education-important/ Here's a preview: Today, about 61 million primary school aged children are out of school About 40 million of these children live in poor, conflict afflicted countries. An estimated 250 million children cannot read, write, or count well Education can save lives. A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to live past age 5 Every additional year of maternal education reduces the child mortality rate by 2 percent Education can help bridge the gender gap. As of today women constitute two thirds of the world's illiterate population Education often leads to better decisions. Women in Mali with even a little bit of education have an average of 3 children while those with no education have an average of 7 Benefits of girls' education also correlate with fewer instances of HIV/AIDS, less genital cutting, and better overall health For girls in poor countries every additional year of education past grade three leads to 20% higher wages Educated mothers are more than 50% more likely to immunize their kids Women with 5 or more years of education are more likely to seek prenatal care and assisted child birth which contributes to higher levels of maternal and child healthcare According to USAID, more education for girls is one of the best ways to fight hunger. It even outperforms temporarily increasing the food supply. According to the International Food Policy Research Institute 40% of the decrease in malnutrition between 1970 and 1995 was the result of better farming practices stemming from increased education If women farmers had the same level of education as male farmers the UN estimates that crop production in Kenya could rise by over 20% If every child in the world received a primary education then in the next decade an estimated 7 million cases of HIV could be avoided Studies show that rural Ugandans with a secondary education have a 75% lower rate of HIV than those without education The ability of girls to avoid HIV when educated is so well documented that education has come to be known as the "social vaccine" Education is a prerequisite for long term economic growth. No country in history has every achieved sustained economic growth without at least 40% of its adult population being literate By not offering girls the same educational opportunities as boys developing countries lose on average $90 billion per year For every year of additional education a person's average earnings increase by 10% This translates to an 1% annual increase in GDP if quality education is offered to everyone Education promotes peace. Every year that a male is educated contributes to a 20% smaller likelihood of him engaging in violent activity Education is a crucial building block for an inclusive, democratic society. Education helps break the cycle of poverty and promotes sustainable development in emerging nations Education is one of the most effective ways to improve quality of life in the developing world.
