La Porteña, 'the girl from Buenos Aires', was Argentina's first steam locomotive, built in Leeds in the 1850s. Among its duties was the transport of wine from Mendoza to the capital. The old girl, long since retired, lives on in spirit in this easy drinking red. It's the craftsmanship of one of Argentina's finest family wineries, Zuccardi. The company was founded by entrepreneur Alberto Zuccardi, who planted his first vineyard in 1963 to show off his irrigation system. Today it's run by three generations and leads the field in innovation and quality. Enjoy Malbec's seductive dark fruit with the brambly complexity of Shiraz in this silky red. Tasty solo and versatile with food - from vegetarian bakes to sausages - and great at a barbecue.

Big and full-bodied, with lots of ripe fruit and a hint of black pepper and vanilla, this is a classic "Cali Cab Sav blend" with enough age to show off delicious maturity. Nothing says California red wine like predominately Cabernet Sauvignon aged in oak casks. And this mix of 75% Cab Sav with 25% Petite Syrah is truly one of the best we†ve ever tasted. The 2 grape varietals grow next to each other in the vineyard in California's Dry Creek Valley which makes them a perfect compliment to each other, and the wine spends 20 months in French oak before bottling. (Ah, retirement.) The folks at Old World make wines that not only taste wonderful, but also are true to their vineyards. They never add yeast because they think the native yeast better expresses the wine†s origins, much like soil and growing conditions tie grapes to certain regions. tip of the tongue We were thrilled to get a Cabernet blend this good, with this much age, for this price. Grab one to drink now and one to open in a few more years.

Everybody's crazy about Pinot Noir lately, and for good reason. It†s light-bodied but complex, drinkable when young, even better with age. And St. Innocent Temperance Hill 2013 is a showstopping example. Mellow, yet complex, it's got a lot of dark cherry and berry fruitiness, but with intriguing smoke and spice. Soft tannins (you know, that create that slightly puckery feeling inside your cheeks?) make it a food-friendly wine, without being too dry. It†s spectacular right now and will only get better with age. (Like us.) Interesting tidbit: The certified-organic grapes come from 2 blocks of a small vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills district of the Willamette valley. tip of the tongue This wine is amazing with simple grilled meat, fish and vegetables. We†ll be drinking it at barbecues all summer. ingredients 12.5% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

Long before anyone on this side of the Atlantic was devoted to eating seasonally and locally, the French were doing precisely that, just as they had been for centuries. Although the high-end haute cuisine of Paris exported itself far and wide many decades ago, the varied regional cooking styles of France continue to reveal themselves to the world and dazzle those fortunate enough to experience them firsthand. Williams-Sonoma's Essentials of French Cooking takes you on a meandering food lover's tour of France, from the windswept coastline of Brittany, where the lamb tastes of the salty fields on which it grazes, southward through Gascony, with its bracing Armagnac and rib-sticking cassoulet, to the delicious fish stews of Marseilles and the Mediterranean, and back up through Burgundy, where the wine flows from some of the world's greatest vineyards and the local Dijon mustard makes a perfect sauce for the local rabbit. In these pages you'll also explore the fascinating intersections of culture and gastronomy in Alsace, where potatoes, cabbage, and beer lend a Germanic heft to the traditional menu; sunny Provence, where dishes made with tomatoes, garlic, olives, and basil link its cooking to that of neighboring Italy; and the Basque country, where Spanish flavors and Moorish spices like saffron and cumin have seeped over the Pyrenees. In addition to presenting a wide range of traditional, regional main dishes to build meals around, this collection of more than 140 carefully selected recipes covers a full range of courses and techniques, from silky baked farm-fresh eggs to brilliantly simple preparations for every season's vegetables through the most luxurious chocolate creams and satisfying rustic fruit tarts. And while terroir plays an undeniable role in this cuisine, true French cooking is comfort food for family and friends, which translates everywhere. A comprehensive glossary and a section on basic stocks and sauces help you fill your pantry with the authentic elements and bring one of the world's most admired cuisines home to your table.

Do you know what's in your wine? Wine-making has become ever-more unnatural, from the use of blanket crop-spraying in vineyards, to the over-use of sulphites, but finally someone is doing something about it. Isabelle Legeron MW, otherwise known as "That Crazy French Woman", is leading the campaign for natural wine wine made as nature intended. There is no official description of natural wine, but a rough definition is that it is made from grapes that are farmed organically or biodynamically and harvested manually, and that the wine should ideally be made without adding or removing anything during the vinification process. It is basically good old-fashioned grape juice fermented into wine, just as nature intended. That Crazy French Woman is a crusader for the natural wine movement: she has her own show on the Travel Channel, organises a hugely successful annual natural wine festival (RAW) in London, and acts as adviser to several leading restaurants. Just as the craft beer movement has taken off across the globe, the demand for natural wine is growing and will continue to do so.
