After two series of her sketch show Victoria Wood - As Seen on TV (1985-86), Victoria Wood returned to longer narratives with these slices of comic observation. Modest in ambition and scale but rich in wit and acuity, the six playlets showcase Wood's eye for human foibles and her distinctively eccentric characters. Wood appears in each story as (more or less) herself, a reluctant participant in her friend's fruitless efforts at self-improvement. In 'Staying In', she faces ordeal by dinner party thanks to Jane (Deborah Grant). 'Val de Ree' sees Victoria and the similarly inexperienced Jackie (Celia Imrie) struggling with a recalcitrant tent and masquerading as seasoned explorers to satisfy a haughty hostel warden (Joan Simms). In the gloriously titled 'Mens Sana in Thingummy Doodah' she rebels against health fascism by leading an illicit outing to a cafe for a fry-up. Imrie's tour rep in 'We'd Quite Like to Apologise' is one gem - maddening cheeriness untempered by an ounce of competence or empathy - and Susie Blake has a brief but splendid cameo in the same story as a cynical check-in attendant, while Julie Walter's loyalty is rewarded with two of the choicest parts: Pam the daytime TV demagogue, in 'Over to Pam', and Nicola, the out-of-her-depth manageress of Pinkney's Health Farm in 'Mens Sana.', whose vapidity is exceeded only by her merciless demolition of the English language ("if you should need me at all during the periodical which you're with us, just examine a member of staff who's approximate").

Over the course of one night, Eddie and May argue and talk incessantly, fighting and making love with equal fervour, until the dark truth at the heart of their tumultuous relationship is gradually revealed. Only a derelict, alcoholic old man (Harry Dean Stanton) knows the secret that could destroy Eddie and May's love forever. In 'The Long Goodbye' (1973), Los Angeles detective Philip Marlowe (Elliott Gould) smells a rat when his friend Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton), whom he has just driven to Tijuana, is accused of murder. Convinced of Lennox's innocence, Marlowe follows a convoluted trail which leads him to his friend's mistress, Eileen Wade (Nina Van Pallandt), her alcoholic husband (Sterling Hayden) and hood Marty Augustine (Mark Rydell), to whom Lennox owed a substantial sum of money. 'Mash' (1970) depicts the crazy antics and the sexual adventures of Hawkeye Pierce (Donald Sutherland), Trapper John McIntyre (Gould) and Duke Forrest (Tom Skerritt), all surgeons working in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. The black humour of the medical team is contrasted with the terrible waste of life that they are exposed to. In 'O.C. and Stiggs' (1987), Oliver Cromwell Ogilvie (Daniel Jenkins), aka O.C, and his buddy Mark Stiggs (Neill Barry), are a pair of misfit teenagers whose greatest joy in life is making those around them miserable. The pair idolizes musician King Sunny Ade, and when they find out he's playing a show in Mexico, they travel to see him with their dimwitted friend Barney. As the summer progresses, O.C. and Stiggs continue to torment their neighbours, the Schwabs - at Lenore's (Laura Urstein) wedding, and at the opening night of the local theatre group's play, to which they invite King Sunny Ade and his African Beats to perform. In 'Thieves Like Us' (1973), a convicted murderer (Keith Carradine) is serving his sentence on a prison farm when he manages to escape with two accomplices. They go on the run, embarking on a series of violent bank robberies, but it is not long before the police are on their trail.

One of the undisputed masterpieces of the cinema, no single viewing of "Earth" will ever reveal all of its poetic brilliance. The third in a triptych of films by Ukrainian director Alexander Dovzheko (after "Zvenigora" in 1927 and "Arsenal" in 1928), Earth is strikingly simple in plot. On the eve of collectivization in the Ukraine, an old farmer dies peacefully in bed. His grandson Vasil has a new vision: the village council will buy a tractor to be shared among the farmers. Struggling against the superstition, rich landowners and nature itself, Vasil is ultimately the victim of a tragic murder, but the dawn brings forth a new life and the promise of prosperity to the poor village. The story itself is secondary to the beautifully stunning images that Dovzhenko creates. His love for the Ukrainian people and land intoxicates the viewer with the sensual splendors that fill the screen. Assigned to make a film commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 1917 Revolution, Vsevolod Pudovkin crafted an intensely dramatic and personal dramatization of those earth-shaking events. The End of St. Petersburg opens on a farm where a peasant must stay in the field and plow as his wife dies in childbirth. Trudging to the city to seek work, he is forced into scab labor. He tragically realizes the consequences of his mistake and violently attacks his employer. After jail, he is forced to join the army. World War I, in the best depiction yet of the horrors of battle, destroys all in its path as the bourgeois speculators grow rich. But the revolution frees St. Petersburg from the brutal yoke of the rich and there is born a new hope for the future. The New York Times remarked that "one feels sometimes as though this film were a remarkable newsreel of the Russian Revolution."
