Unfortunately no. See why in my video Salmonella in Chicken & Turkey: Deadly But Not Illegal (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/salmonella-in-chicken-turkey-deadly-but-not-illegal/). How to use an old salvaged shopping cart/trolley to make a homemade trap that actually works. The materials were entirely free and it took maybe three hours. We really like foxes (as we really like all the wildlife we are lucky enough to have around us) but one of the local ones has learned how to get over the fence of our hen run. We've lost a few, and of course we have a responsibility to our hens too. We don't have a gun, and we won't use poison or snares (for reasons which should be obvious if you watch this video), so that only left a trap as a possible solution. Fox traps are expensive to buy (and how often do you need one?) so this is my really simple homemade design. The bait we used were bones, sausages, cat food, and finally a dead hen. The biggest problem was the rats -- they would eat the bait and not set off the trap, or the trap would spring but they'd just walk away. So it seems the hen is the only thing that will work. You might notice that I have not included the 'B' word in the title, description or tags -- I don't want anyone looking up how to catch these wonderful animals. We have re-set the trap and if we catch anything else we'll let you know.. TAGS: how to, make, fox, live, trap, live-trap, trapping, shopping, trolley, cart, catch, salvaged, homemade, foxes, wildlife, hens, chickens, run, gun, poison, snares, design, bait, bones, sausages, cat food, dead, set off, spring, sprung, drop-door, recycled, earth, soil, self-sufficiency, organic, smallholding, homesteading, permaculture, sustainability, life, natural living, blow-in, blog, way out west, DIY, poultry, coop, GIY, rural, expat, farming, country, vlog, free-range, back to, nature, home grown, small scale, down to earth, hands on, animal husbandry, west, cork, Ireland, Irish, mixed, healthy, traditional, skills, small farm, harvest, home, produce, garden, gardening, growing, crops, vegetables, wild,

Mostly fresh air coop design. Chickens free range into large orchard. Nest boxes designed for eggs to roll forward, the screen shows which boxes have the eggs. It prevents egg eating and keeps them cleaner. Easy to clean nest box - simple pull it out rinse it off. They seem to really like the astroturf.

CLF teamed up with the Video and Film Arts Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) to produce Out to Pasture: The Future of Farming? films in 2010, which explore important issues in our food system. CLF and MICA also collaborated to produce a film about sustainable food animal production entitled Out to Pasture: The Future of Farming? (34 minutes) CLF's Leo Horrigan plays the role of producer for Out to Pasture and Allen Moore, a MICA professor and independent filmmaker, directs the film. Out to Pasture contrasts industrial-style confined animal production with farms that raise food animals outdoors in diversified operations, striving to be sustainable. Several of these pasture-based farmers are profiled and they tell their own vibrant stories of bucking the trends in farming. They discuss how they got started in farming (three transitioned from confinement operations), what's important about their farming methods, how their conventional-farm neighbors view them, how to keep young people on the farm, the future of the food system, and other compelling topics. The film also features Robert Lawrence, director of CLF; and John Ikerd, a leading thinker on sustainable agriculture issues. http://www.jhsph.edu/research/centers-and-institutes/johns-hopkins-center-for-a-livable-future/news_events/multimedia/out_of_pastore.html

Can deciphering the label on an egg carton help consumers change the food system? David Evans and Alexis Koefoed think so. These poultry farmers explain the real story behind such catchphrases as "cage free", "free range" and "pasture raised" so that consumers can make informed decisions when they go to their local supermarket. The reason: they want chicks. "They have an inner life and you know I do still eat meat and chicken but it's good at least to know and I'm moving to being not as much of a carnivore."

http://tedxmanhattan.org http://saveantibiotics.org How antibiotics are being used to compensate for the overcrowded, stressful conditions on industrial farms and how that's creating superbugs that threaten public health. Lance Price is a public health researcher who works at the interface between science and policy to address the growing crisis of antibiotic resistance. In the laboratory, Dr. Price uses cutting-edge DNA sequencing to trace the origins of new antibiotic-resistant pathogens. By analyzing the genomes of bacteria found in humans, food, and livestock, Dr. Price and his colleagues have traced the origins of new superbugs to industrial livestock production. Dr. Price and his colleagues have also begun to broaden the scope of foodborne disease to include urinary tract infections caused by foodborne E. coli. In the policy arena, Dr. Price works with grassroots organizations, NGOs, and policymakers to develop science-based policies to curb antibiotic abuse in food-animal production and stem the emergence of new superbugs. Dr. Price's work was selected by Discover Magazine as one of the top 100 science stories of 2012. His research has also been covered by top-tier media around the world, including the BBC, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Scientific American, Men's Journal, and Fitness Magazine, among others. With rising input costs on the farm, producers are looking for ways to get more income out of their farming operation. One way is to add value to a by-product and that is what one couple is doing with their poultry houses in Western Kentucky. At the W.P.
