The World Health Organization warns that overpopulation and a lack of arable land contribute to global food insecurity. So scientists are developing new farming technology to offset potential food shortages. Jason Strother reports for VOA that Researchers in South Korea are experimenting with vertical farms; gardens that go straight up, instead of spreading out.

Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) and Ana Kasparian (http://www.twitter.com/anakasparian) of The Young Turks discuss a graphic video showing a Chinese bear bile farming operation. Scientists have scrutinized the health effects of bear bile but have come to no definitive conclusions. But sold in powdered form as capsules, or as a tonic, bile is considered by many to be an elixir of sorts. Bile marketers say it fortifies the liver, reduces flu symptoms and improves eyesight. While provisions of food, shelter, and healthcare are all necessary for alleviating poverty in the developing world, the most sustainable way to help a community improve its standard of life in the long run is to provide education for its residents. Educated people are more aware of health issues, they farm more effectively, and they can begin to help others around them. For these reasons we here at List25 have decided to collaborate with Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that works to build schools in isolated and poverty stricken communities around the world. We want to help them change the lives of a generation. And here's the cool part...we're inviting you, our readers, to help! Our goals is to raise $25,000. For this amount we can build, staff, and maintain a school. If you are willing to help us change the world, then you can come find out more and partner with us: http://fundraise.pencilsofpromise.org/list25 We appreciate your support and believe that together we can make a tangible impact in the lives of the next generation. These are 25 compelling reasons why education is important. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-compelling-reasons-education-important/ Here's a preview: Today, about 61 million primary school aged children are out of school About 40 million of these children live in poor, conflict afflicted countries. An estimated 250 million children cannot read, write, or count well Education can save lives. A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to live past age 5 Every additional year of maternal education reduces the child mortality rate by 2 percent Education can help bridge the gender gap. As of today women constitute two thirds of the world's illiterate population Education often leads to better decisions. Women in Mali with even a little bit of education have an average of 3 children while those with no education have an average of 7 Benefits of girls' education also correlate with fewer instances of HIV/AIDS, less genital cutting, and better overall health For girls in poor countries every additional year of education past grade three leads to 20% higher wages Educated mothers are more than 50% more likely to immunize their kids Women with 5 or more years of education are more likely to seek prenatal care and assisted child birth which contributes to higher levels of maternal and child healthcare According to USAID, more education for girls is one of the best ways to fight hunger. It even outperforms temporarily increasing the food supply. According to the International Food Policy Research Institute 40% of the decrease in malnutrition between 1970 and 1995 was the result of better farming practices stemming from increased education If women farmers had the same level of education as male farmers the UN estimates that crop production in Kenya could rise by over 20% If every child in the world received a primary education then in the next decade an estimated 7 million cases of HIV could be avoided Studies show that rural Ugandans with a secondary education have a 75% lower rate of HIV than those without education The ability of girls to avoid HIV when educated is so well documented that education has come to be known as the "social vaccine" Education is a prerequisite for long term economic growth. No country in history has every achieved sustained economic growth without at least 40% of its adult population being literate By not offering girls the same educational opportunities as boys developing countries lose on average $90 billion per year For every year of additional education a person's average earnings increase by 10% This translates to an 1% annual increase in GDP if quality education is offered to everyone Education promotes peace. Every year that a male is educated contributes to a 20% smaller likelihood of him engaging in violent activity Education is a crucial building block for an inclusive, democratic society. Education helps break the cycle of poverty and promotes sustainable development in emerging nations Education is one of the most effective ways to improve quality of life in the developing world.

Urban agriculture has been real for decades, starting with the industrialization of Western Europe in the 20th century. Urban agriculture has been also well practiced in poor economies such as Cuba, where it serves as an important way of self-reliance. Today, with conventional agriculture "Big Ag" being at a cross-road in terms of its ecological impact on the environment and the increased food demand of a population growing to 9bn people by 2050, urban agriculture may very well be one key of a solution for the 21st century. As Roman explains, urban agriculture offers the solution to grow potentially enough food in the city to feed its entire population. What's more, it also creates healthier, wealthier and happier cities, offering consumers with fresh & quality food choices and access to better quality of life. Roman Gaus, Founder of UrbanFarmers Roman Gaus (32)- from corporate career to social entrepreneur & urban farmer. Roman's story is both fascinating and inspiring. When Roman returned from the States to Switzerland, he left a short but steep career with companies such as Procter & Gamble, Novartis and Franke Group. Yet, he brought with him an emerging concept about inner-city farming, which he had seen take a grass roots approach in US cities. Back in Switzerland, Roman was surprised by the proven, Swiss-engineered technology know-how of Aquaponic; a combination of fish and vegetable farming, ideally suited to grow locally grown & organic food without soil in the city -- the idea behind UrbanFarmers was born. Determined to drive economic, social and ecological impact, Roman is now founder & CEO of UrbanFarmers AG, a pioneering Spin-off from the University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in Wädenswil that aims to bring sustainable urban agricultural practices into cities of the 21st century. His Bronx classroom features the first indoor edible wall in NYC DOE which routinely generates enough produce to feed 450 students healthy meals and trains the youngest nationally certified workforce in America.  Stephen has consistently moved attendance from 40% to 93% daily, helped fund/create 2,200 youth jobs, captured the US EPA Award for transforming mindsets and landscapes in NYC, recently won the ABC Above and Beyond Award, helped earn his school the first ever Citywide Award of Excellence from the NYC Strategic Alliance for Health and attributes these results directly to growing vegetables in school. His speech at Columbia University, "From Crack to Cucumbers," along with the release of a You-Tube Video (Urban Farming NYC) resulted in a national following including an invite to the White House Garden. Dedicated to harvesting hope and cultivating minds, Stephen dreams of opening a nationally replicable Career Technical Education public school in the poorest Congressional District in America rooted in urban agriculture, green and sustainable initiatives. Dickson talks about Vertical Farming: A 21st century hunger and conservation solution that promises, "urban renewal, sustainable production of a safe and varied food supply (year-round crop production), and the eventual repair of ecosystems that have been sacrificed for horizontal farming." Dickson Despommier is the Emeritus Professor of Public Health and Microbiology at Columbia University, and the vertical farming concept grew out of a medical ecology course he taught in 1999. Articles about the subject have been published in The New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, Popular Science, Scientific American and Maxim. In October 2010, his first book on the subject, The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century, was published. More can be learned through his website, verticalfarm.com. What is TEDx? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDxBrainport 2012 - Making the Future Gertjan Meeuws is a pretty stubborn Dutch horticultural engineer, convinced that the way we are producing our food today, won't be a sustainable solution for feeding the world of tomorrow. Born in The Netherlands in 1962, he finished the University of Applied Sciences in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1983. Ever since, he has been involved in improving the performances of crops by combining his plant physiological knowledge with developing mathematical models and disrupting insights. Gertjan says we are using too much land, too much water, too much pesticides and too much transportation to deliver fresh food. He is managing partner of PlantLab, where he and his partners are not looking for improving the existing supply chain, but for creating a totally new and better one, based on their invention: Plant Paradise. Food - Can we feed the world? About TEDxBrainport 2012 - Making the Future There are many challenges in the world today. Hunger and disease continue to affect large parts of the developing world. Financial instability is halting progress in developed countries. We're running out of resources and changing the natural world in ways we don't totally understand. How can we make a better future? Discover the next big bordering-on-crazy ideas for humanity at TEDxBrainport 2012. About TEDx. TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.

To see a community reclaiming the crumbling city blocks to grow the food they need is an incredible story in so many ways. It was moving, topical and also a beautiful and apt illustration of what the song is actually about - triumph over adversity. As a video concept, it was perfect in so many ways." - Above & Beyond's Tony McGuinness Initially inspired by an article written by journalist Paul Harris on Detroit's urban renewal city farms in the Guardian newspaper, the video for Above & Beyond and Gareth Emery pres. OceanLab 'On A Good Day (Metropolis)' captures the song's essential meaning of triumph over adversity through the powerful, visual narrative of the Georgia Street Community Collective and their determination to make a better, brighter life for their local community. Since the collapse of a once thriving automotive industry, Detroit has become known as a monument of urban decay with disused warehouses, derelict wasteland and vacant factories peppering the city. Georgia Street Community Collective are one of many organisations harnessing local action and bringing community volunteers together to create positive results -- regenerating wasteland as urban farms and community gardens. Today, the Finchers make a living selling their organic produce to restaurants and at the local farmers' market twice a week for much of the year. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65841 In Singapore, the challenge of feeding a growing population is pushing the concept of urban farming to new heights. A super-efficient vertical farming system is producing greens for 5 million residents. "Can we supply enough food for everyone on the planet?" is a question plaguing leaders around the world. In Singapore SkyGreen offers one example of how this might be possible, "not just technically, but economically". By increasing their food security while reducing the impact of food production on global climate change, SkyGreen is 10 times more productive per square foot than conventional farming. Last year, NASA announced that they had found water on Mars. This posed a question to scientists: Could we grow plants in the soil of Mars? Trace explains what is necessary to grow crops on Earth, and if Mars is able to sustain life. Read More: This Scoop of Mars Soil is Two Percent Water http://news.discovery.com/space/this-scoop-of-mars-soil-is-two-percent-water-130926.htm "By now, we probably all know that there was once significant quantities of water on the Martian surface and, although the red planet is bone dry by terrestrial standards, water persists as ice just below the surface to this day." Vegetables on Mars Within Ten Years http://phys.org/news/2014-04-vegetables-mars-ten-years.html "The soil on Mars may be suitable for cultivating food crops -- this is the prognosis of a study by plant ecologist Wieger Wamelink of Wageningen UR." NASA Mars Rover Fully Analyzes First Soil Samples http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/news/msl20121203.html "NASA's Mars Curiosity rover has used its full array of instruments to analyze Martian soil for the first time, and found a complex chemistry within the Martian soil." Lunar Regolith http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/lunar/letss/regolith.pdf "The lunar surface is covered by a layer of unconsolidated debris called the lunar regolith." Lunar Soil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_soil "Lunar soil is the fine fraction of the regolith found on the surface of the Moon." Growing Plants on Mars http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/03/130328075708.htm "Concrete plans for a one-way ticket to Mars have been forged. Food will have to be grown on location. Is this a distant future scenario? Not for scientists researching whether or not it is possible to grow plants on the moon."
