Comparison of raw vs. soaked nuts when not organic. Soaking is a method of making your nuts more digestible and I normally conduct this with organic nuts but they were unavailable so I bought conventional instead. To my surprise this is what I found....

Mowing the weeds one final time before harvest. We sprayed the weeds this year to help conserve water so they were already dead, but mowing with the flail mower helps chop the weeds up to prepare the ground for harvest. The surface of the soil needs to be smooth and flat in order to sweep and pick up the almonds off the ground.

Blossomtime in Santa Clara County is a San Jose Chamber of Commerce film made by Charles H. Bowen for the A.L. Castle Company in 1955. This film takes us on a tour of the various fruits and nuts that blossomed each year in the Valley of Heart's Delight, Santa Clara Valley, California. Originally silent, the film exists in several different versions, of which this is the longest. Introducing us to the "Prelude to Prosperity are two lovely ladies outside the Chamber of Commerce on San Carlos Street in Downtown San Jose. Then we tour the orchards. Almonds, Cherries, Pears, Prunes, and others are showcased. Time-lapse photography (extremely time consuming with the 16mm on which this was made) shows us the actual blossoming of each variety. The film ends with a panorama from the Southwestern end of the valley. A part of the Pioneers Film Archive, his film was generously donated by Richard and April Bowen. Music by Philip Glass. Walking down on the moor, today, at the bottom paddock--a purple paddock, actually--full of that tall wild purple weed that looks like "everlasting" (Stachys?), but isn't. The Stone Pine I planted from a seed, about 26 years ago, is so very HUGE now. The wild cockatoos eat the nuts, so that's nice. We ought to bend our steps down there, more often, and collect some nut-filled cones for ourselves, too! (I also have another smaller Stone Pine tree nearer the house, but it hasn't started yielding nuts yet. Should be developing cones in the next year or so.) (•‿•)
