This is the flagship wine of the leading winery in Argentina, Catena Zapata. Grown at high altitude in the Andean foothills, the grapes are selected from Catena Zapata's two best vineyards, Nicasia and Adrianna. This is a case that warrants a place in any collectors collection. This wine is not eligible for same or next day delivery. About the Producer Catina Zapatat's wines have single handedly raised the profile of Argentine as a hub for wine production. The winery was founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, who was one of the first winemakers to introduce European winemaking techniques to Argentina and pioneered Malbec and vine growing in high altitudes. Taste Extremely aromatic, this wine opens with smoky red fruits, blueberries, violets and blossom. The palate reveals mocha, raspberry, cassis, cloves, sweet spices and a hint of iodine minerality. It finishes with an explosion of sweet fruit and succulent tannin. This is by no means a shrinking violet! Awards/Press Awarded 94 by Luis Gutierrez: " The 2010 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino is a blend of grapes from Adrianna and Nicasia, from the deepest, coolest soils in those vineyards, in Gualtallary and Altamira. They were looking for something that represents the essence of Malbec. The first vintage for this wine was 2004, when they finally found the blend and character they were looking for. The name they wanted to use for the wine was Malbec Puro, but they didn't want any confusion with cigars, so they called it Malbec Argentino instead! It is very aromatic with floral notes, mainly violets and blue fruit, and is nicely defined. It is opulent with sweet tannins but with the hallmark of the freshness found in all the wines from those two vineyards, precise and long. " Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate #212, April 2014 Awarded 93 by Michael Schachner: " Jammy and mineral-smelling at the same time, this Malbec exhibits an ideal set of plum and berry aromas. The palate is full but juicy, fresh and alert. Raspberry, currant, toast and spice flavors finish elegant and long, with no break-up in the wine's totality. Drink through 2022. " Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast, January 2015
