Addiction recovery is not a one size fits all process. Different people need different kinds of support depending on their situation, substance use history, and mental health needs. Therapy plays a central role in most addiction treatment programs. One of the most common approaches is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps people identify and change thought patterns that lead to substance use. Other approaches include motivational interviewing, which strengthens a person’s motivation to change, and family therapy, which helps rebuild trust and improve communication with loved ones. Many treatment programs also use group therapy, where individuals share experiences and learn from others facing similar challenges. For some people, therapy is combined with medical care or medication-assisted treatment for a more complete recovery plan.
