It's a fact that whenever growers get together to share thoughts and ideas, good things happen. That's exactly what the Monitor's Mark Wildman witnessed when he traveled to this year's Southeast Fruit and Vegetable Conference on Georgia's coast in Savannah. As Mark explains, everyone walked away with some new ideas to make their farm operations a little bit better.

When the time came for the Newton Brothers Orchards to expand there was no support. In the past they had been cut off by the banks and were unable to complete their harvest of apples. With the help of Bankwest and their agricultural finance offerings, the family were able to upgrade their production and keep the agricultural business running.

Watch our sit down talk with Ro! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC8hMzN5EQg&list=PLuLFaB3dTTefb91Xvzyl0FQvlWnjhi_27&index=2 Check out Ro and Nerdy Nummies online! http://www.youtube.com/RosannaPansino LEGO CANDY MOLD: To make our Lego mold, we created our own food-safe silicone mold with a product called CopyFlex. You can find out more about it here: http://www.makeyourownmolds.com/copy-flex To create the mold, we used legos and made a small little basin for the mixture. We made sure this was two blocks high. Then place whatever legos you want to mold inside making sure they are one space away on all edges. Mix your silicone mold materials and then slowly pour the silicone in. Pour from a high height so the silicone is very thin by the time it reaches the Lego basin. Slowly fill up the entire mold from one end to the next. After 4-5 hours, the entire mixture will have solidified and you can remove the Lego pieces and voila, you've got a mold you can make candy with! LEGO GUMMY CANDY: 1 package of flavored Jello 3 packages of unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup of water In a bowl, combine the jello, unflavored gelatin and stir. Pour in your 1/2 cup of water and stir until no clumps remain and let sit for a few minutes. In a pan, heat up water and place the bowl inside and stir the gelatin until it completely dissolves. It should create a layer of foam across the top. Place your mold on a baking pan or a moveable flat surface like a cuttin board. Using a syringe or turkey baster, extract your Jello dissolved mixture and into your mold. To avoid bubbles, suck the mixture out from the bottom of the bowls and make sure to slowly put the mixture into the mold so it doesn't bubble up more. To make your gummy candy stackable, simply place flat lego pieces across the mold where you've poured the jello mixture in. Place the molds into a freezer and after about 15 minutes, your candy will have hardened into a gummy shape and you should be able to pull them out of the mold with ease! If you don't want to make your own mold, you can buy awesome ones from Amazon! www.globalfilmmakers.com The Simkin family have farmed in Essington since 1892 and have retailed to local residents since that date. The fruit farm dates from 1978; Richard and Mary are the 4th generation and Will is the 5th generation to farm here. The farm is run on traditional principles and varieties are often old fashioned ones selected for flavour. Because all our crops are sold direct to the customer they can be brought straight from the field to the shop. You therefore benefit from the best in flavour and nutrition. We breed and grow our own pork - again using traditional methods and breeds to ensure you benefit from the added taste gained from these methods of production. All our pigs are run free range, outdoor produced, without the use of feed additives or growth promoters. We share our customers' concerns with the environment and try to work with nature in our production techniques. We follow the principles of LEAF "Linking Environment and Farming" and are pleased to see the resultant wildlife on the farm. We strongly believe that the environment, the customer and the grower are all best served by buying local produce direct from the grower. It is fresher, more nutritious and generates less packaging and less pollution in transport. Essington Fruit Farm is a family business run by the Simkin family who have farmed in Essington for over 110 years retailing quality produce from our farm since that date. We have a commitment to providing our produce as fresh as possible and as we grow our own produce it is often the case that fruit and vegetables are less than an hour old before they are sold in our farm shop . March 2007 saw the opening of our Butchery and Deli giving us an outlet for our own free range pork and beef and lamb from neighbouring farmers. We opened our restaurant in 1990 enabling us to offer our own produce cooked in our country kitchen restaurant. The kitchen also bakes daily for the shop providing traditional home baking as fresh as possible.

video frying with olive oil Ya'll see when it was time to eat I went for the big pieces lol! It taste like regular fried chicken to me. Just FYI. Made with Olive Oil And Soy Flour www.twitter.com/plusizekimonca Info on Olive oil http://www.oliveoilsource.com/article/frying-olive-oil This info came from ^^that site. Bottom line, olive oil is a superior health choice over commonly used vegetable oils. Not only is olive oil an excellent choice for light to medium frying, but it is unsurpassed to drizzle over a salad, use in marinades or in sauces that are mildly heated. In our kitchen, the advantage of using olive oil for healthy living surpasses the use of the vegetable oils for slow and medium heat frying. For those who are curious about oils and the frying process in general please read Russ Parsons' excellent first chapter in "How To Read a French Fry".

http://www.fao.org/agriculture/crops/thematic-sitemap/theme/spi/en/ In these videos, experts discuss the latest research on perennial crops at the FAO workshop on Perennial Crops for Food Security on 28 -- 30 August 2013. We need to "Perennialize" agriculture. Perennial agriculture, including perennial grains, oil seeds and legumes as well as forages and trees can take sustainable intensification to the next level and achieve productivity goals as well as social and ecosystem service benefits. It has been only in the past few years that the benefits of developing perennial grain-based cropping systems and the need to do so have become widely acknowledged. This has drawn the attention of major scientific societies, leading journals and governmental agencies. Much of that attention has been focused on the ecological benefits that perennial plants can confer on landscapes: erosion prevention, efficient capture and use of water and nutrients, protection of water resources, carbon sequestration and maintenance of thriving soil ecosystems. © FAO: http://www.fao.org

Home-made, organic alternative to a hot-water bottle. Based on our Cochin Chinese bantam Snowy, I designed and made this from what I had available -- a remnant of organic percale, left over from a sheet and the certified organic chicken grain I feed to our poultry. I have provided a link below for organic fabric and you can use all kinds of different sorts of grain. The heat/cold pad moulds to the body to relieve aches and pains from heaving pallets about and moving perches in cold weather. Organic Fabric Suppliers I use -- if you know of any others please let me know. Greenfibres, Totnes, Devon ,UK. http://www.greenfibres.com/pages/default.aspx - they also sell an organic undyed unbleached flannel, which would do really well. La Cantata du chanvre, 25000 Besançon, France. http://www.cantate-du-chanvre.com How I heat the warmer -- in our woodburner at 150 deg C (approx 300F) for 15 minutes. I turn it several times and I cover it with baking paper to prevent any possible damage to embroidery. To use as a cold pad, freeze the Snowy warmer in a plastic bag for 3 hours and make a soothing treatment pad for sprains and bruises. There are many sites on the internet telling how to microwave and heat wheat warmers in a conventional oven. As I have no experience of these it is better to consult them.

Floriculture or flower farming as it is popularly called is a discipline of Horticulture, and is the study of growing and marketing flowers and foliage plants. Floriculture includes cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for sales or for use as raw materials in cosmetic and perfume industry and the pharmaceutical sector. The persons associated with this field are called floriculturists. Officially Floriculture began in the late 1800's in England where flowers were grown in large estates, and now has spread to most other countries as well. The floral industry today has grown to much larger proportions and offers a wide scope for growth and profits. The countries involved in the import of flowers are Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy and Japan while those involved in export are Columbia, Israel, Spain and Kenya. In India, Floriculture industry comprises flower trade, production of nursery plants and potted plants, seed and bulb production, micro propagation and extraction of essential oils. Though the annual domestic demand for the flowers is growing at a rate of over 25% and international demand at around Rs 90,000 crore India's share in international market of flowers is negligible. India has a blooming future as far as floriculture is concerned. Enormous genetic diversity, varied agro climatic conditions, versatile human resources etc offer India a unique scope for judicious employment of existing resources and exploration of avenues yet untouched. Karnataka is the leader in floriculture, accounting for 75% of India's total flower production. The state has the highest area under modern cut flowers, and 40 flower growing and exporting units. The expert committee set up by Govt. of India for promotion of export oriented floriculture units has identified Bangalore, Pune, New Delhi and Hyderabad as the major areas suitable for such activity especially for cut flowers. APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) is the registering authority for such units. The employment opportunities in this field are as varied as the nature of work itself. One can join the field of floriculture as farm/estate managers, plantation experts and supervisors, project coordinators etc. Research and teaching are some other avenues of employment in the field. Marketing of Floriculture products for different ventures is emerging as a potential segment of this field. Besides one can work as consultant, landscape architect etc with proper training. One can also work as entrepreneur and offer employment to others. In addition to these careers which involve research and actual growing of crops, floriculture also provides service career opportunities which include such jobs as floral designers, groundskeepers, landscape designers, architects and horticultural therapists. Such jobs require practitioners to deal directly with clients. Professional qualification combined with an inclination towards gardening and such other activities produces efficient floriculturists and landscaping professionals. The skills and knowledge required are imparted under the professional courses of floriculture and landscaping
